Ebook About
“A page turner. With candor and clarity, Tony Wagner tells the story of his remarkable life and, in so doing, tells the story of our education system.”—Angela Duckworth, Founder and CEO, Character Lab, and New York Times bestselling author of GritOne of the world's top experts on education delivers an uplifting memoir on his own personal failures and successes as he sought to become a good learner and teacher.Tony Wagner is an eminent education specialist: he has taught at every grade level from high school through graduate school; worked at Harvard; done significant work for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; and speaks across the country and all over the world. But before he found his success, Wagner was kicked out of middle school, expelled from high school, and dropped out of two colleges. Learning by Heart is his powerful account of his years as a student and teacher. After struggling in both roles, he learned to create meaningful learning experiences despite the constraints of conventional schooling--initially for himself and then for his students--based on understanding each student's real interests and strengthening his or her intrinsic motivations. Wagner's story sheds light on critical issues facing parents and educators today, and reminds us that trial and error, resilience, and respect for the individual, are at the very heart of all teaching and learning.

Book Learning by Heart: An Unconventional Education Review :

Tony Wagner is well known for his modern perspective on education, in particular what it takes to prepare kids for today's dynamic world. This book, however, is special because it essentially tells his own story. Tony talks openly about how the regular education system failed him because it did not engage him or provide anything he saw as relevant and authentic. This revealing first-person story provides the insight so many educators and others miss about why education is failing today. Tony shares his insatiable desire to learn, and how the "standardized" education system missed the mark completely. He even notes how all the required courses in the Harvard Education School provided little or no value. Unlike many others, Tony refused to play the game of school just to satisfy others, while continuing to seek ways to satisfy his desire for real learning. He complements that perspective with stories of real authentic learning experiences he had in some non-traditional channels, including a summer camp. In a sense, we learn what education is really about by listening to Tony's life story where he reflects on how traditional education failed him but also how he discovered real authentic learning in unexpected places. This book shows what makes Tony special: he asked the hard questions about what it really takes to prepare himself and others for success and fulfillment in the modern world. That drive to never be satisfied with anything less than real authentic learning relevant for today is what Tony gets right but so many others are reluctant to pursue. I highly recommend that not only educators but those who depend upon talent (just about everyone) read his book and carefully reflect on its core message. If more of us would ask these questions and not be satisfied until we found and acted on the answers, our country and our people would have a much more productive, successful, and fulfilling future. Our future truly depends on such action.
It was an interesting biographical review of the life of Tony Wagner. I also read a couple of his other books about education. The interesting fact was he promotes change but he was ably to actually advance in the system that existed and the system he wants to change. No one can say he is taking the “easy” route or that he’s unaware of the of the reality of the present system. His experience is explained from a view point that there is a better way rather than just judgement on the education experience he encountered..His stories are told from a sensitive angle that illustrates how teachers, faculty, and parents do make a difference in the lives of students whether they are aware of it or not. Highly recommend read if you are passionate about education and its future.
